Henry Donham Lee, shown as H D. Lee, was listed as a head of a family on the 1840 census Riley Township, Vigo County, Indiana. It is assumed that he is one of the individuals shown as between 30 and 40 years old. He is living next to Joha Lee and near John R. Lee and Nath Donham. More children are known than are listed in this census. Not sure who is between 5 and 10, Rebecca or Mary Jane. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also in this household, John Gordon Lee, a male under 5 years old, William Dally Lee, a male age 5 to 10 years old, Hester Ann Lee, a female under 5 years old, Harriet Evelyn Gordon, a female age 30 to 40 years old.5 In the census of 7 November 1850 at Riley Township, Vigo County, Indiana, Henry Donham Lee, shown as Henry D. Lee, is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Harriet Evelyn Gordon, William Dally Lee, Mary Jane Lee, Rebecca Church Lee, Hester Ann Lee, John Gordon Lee, Alma Maranda Lee, Cornelius Scott Lee and Patrick Henry Lee. He is 44 years old, working as a physician, and was born in Ohio. His real estate is valued at $3000. The Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 began over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages in that publication. Cards with groom names were made from these indexes and placed in the Genealogy Division. Later cards with brides names were added to this core index. Through the efforts of the Genealogy Division staff, and the assistance from volunteers, cards were made for both name of bride and groom for all other counties where marriage records exist through 1850. These cards were made from information in the Genealogy Division. Original marriage records are located in the county seat where the marriage took place. The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 (Vigo County, Sarah Ann Lee, Richard Pierce, 25 May 1848) Source No. 189.

  5. Indiana State Library Genealogy Division, Early American Marriages: Indiana to 1850, viewed online @ www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html. , (Indiana). The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 (Ferrel, Anna & Lee, David L., 03 Sept 1834, Indiana, Vigo County) Source No. 189.
