Henry Hughes was born on 10 May 1777 in East Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Henry Hughes and Grace Whedon.1 Henry Hughes was baptized on 6 June 1778 at Trinity Church, New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut.1 Circa 1781, Henry Hughes moved with his parents to Russell, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.2 He survived the death of his father, Henry Hughes, who died on 31 October 1785 in Russell, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.3 On 31 October 1785, Henry moved to East Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut. He moved back to where he was born and lived with his grandfather and perhaps other relatives.1 Henry was working as a seaman and made several sea voyages to Nova Scotia and other points on the Atlantic coast. From stories he told his children, it was assumed that these voyages were made with one of his uncles; but as he had no uncles in the paternal line who were seamen or shipowners, this seems to be a mistake. His mother was greatly opposed to his following a sea-fairing life, and came to New Haven and dissuaded him from proceeding on a voyage about to be undertaken. He yielded to her wishes, and went home with her to Russell; the vessel sailed soon after and was lost. Whoever was the owner of this vessel, there seems no doubt that his escape from her fate was deeply impressed on his memory. After this he lived for a time with his mother at Russell, on the farm, but his stay was short. He went to Hebron, Washington County, New York, to live..4

Henry Hughes married Sally Whedon, daughter of Henry Whedon, in May 1796 in Hebron, Washington County, New York.4 In 1799, Henry moved to Camillus, Onondaga County, New York. Henry Hughes, Freeman Hughes, and brothers-in-law, Augustus Whedon and Abner Carpenter accompanied Henry Hughes on this expedition in search of a new home. At this time the township of Camillus contained a population of only fifty-four, and Syracuse was a small Indian settlement, containing a few white families and situated in an almost inaccessible swamp. The village of Geddes had no existence, and the whole country was a wilderness. The nearest postoffice and settlement of any consequence was at Onondaga Hollow.4

Henry Hughes, shown as Henery Hews, was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 census Russell, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. He is between 16 and 25 and living near Grace Hews and Stephen Hews. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household, Lucretia Hughes, a free white female, under 10 years old, Sally Hughes, a free white female, age 16 to 25 years old.5

Henry Hughes, shown as Henry Hughes., was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 census Onondaga County, New York. He is between 26 and 44 and living near Samuel and Freeman Hughes. Also living was one male between 10 and 15, and two additional males between 16 and 25 Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household,Nathaniel Ladd Thomas, a free white male, under 10 years old, Polly Hughes, Sally Hughes, Maria Hughes and Electra Hughes, free white females, under 10 years old, Lucretia Hughes, a free white female, age 10 to 15 years old, Sally Hughes, a free white female, age 26 to 44 old.6
Henry Hughes bought fifty five acres at Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, on 29 April 1813. The land was purchased from James Geddes. It was a part of lot 36 of the Onondaga Reservation. Subsequent purchases increased this farm to 150 acres. He cleared an acre or more of the land, built a log house, put in a few crops, and the next year, 1800, returned to Hebron to move his small family, his wife and one child, Lucretia to this farm. His mother, Grace, either accompanied him or soon after came to his new home, and lived with him until her death..7

Henry Hughes, shown as Henry Hughes, was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 census Onondaga County, New York. It is assumed that he is the individual between 25 and 45. Also living in this household is one male between 16 and 26 and one female between 26 and 25. He is living near Freeman Hughes. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household, Henry C. Hughes, a free white male, under 10 years old, Nathaniel Ladd Thomas, a free white male, age 10 to 16 years old, Electra Hughes, Laura Hughes and Sally Triphena Hughes, free white females, under 10 years old, Sally Hughes and Maria Hughes, free white females, age 10 to 16 years old, Sally Hughes, a free white female, age 45 years or older.8 Henry Hughes survived the death of his wife, Sally Whedon, who died on 13 February 1821.9

Henry Hughes married Hannah Bowen in March 1822.10
Henry Hughes sold Henry Hughes' farm at Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, to Mortimer F. Sweeting in 1839. Mortimer was Henry Hughes son-in-law..11 In 1840, Henry and Hannah moved to Bellevue, Eaton County, Michigan.11

Henry Hughes married Ruth Brown on 8 August 1841.12

Henry Hughes died on 14 December 1848 in Bellevue, Eaton County, Michigan, at age 71 from a climatic disease which he was afflicted with at the time of the death of his second wife in 1841. He never fully recovered his health and his memory became greatly impaired. Gradually failed, mentally and physically, until his death.. He was a man of prominence in the neighborhood where his active life was passed, of strict integrity and good capacity. He was known familiarly in business and social circles as Captain Hughes. He was an enthusiatic Methodist, and studied the scriptures and commentaries with great persistency, and among religious friends was known as Father Hughes. His integrity commanded the confidence and respect of all, and his genial good humor and well developed intellect made him a pleasant and rational companion. No one was more fond of a jest than he, and very few had much to do with him without feeling the point of his pungent wit; but it was never offecnsive, or approached anything like sarcasm, and was never used as a weapon to wound the feelings of others. The rigid economy which he practiced exhitbited itself in all his affairs, and particularly in his dres; cleanliness and comfort were the governing idea. No ornament was ever seen upon his person; fashion was entirely ignored and its requirements disregarded if not despised.13,14 He is buried in the Bellevue Cemetery located in Bellevue, Eaton County, Michigan. He was buried beside his wfie Hannah.15
