James Scott was born on 12 October 1804 in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.3,2,4 He was the son of Crawford Scott II and Mary Barnes.3,2 In the 1810 census in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, James Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Crawford Scott II; assumption.5 In the 1820 census in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, James Scott is assumed to be enumerated with Crawford Scott II.6

     James Scott married Sarah B.7

A letter written 23 January 1841 by Crawford Scott to his son, James, reads, "My Dear Son, We received your letter written in December just five days after you mailed it. Times are hard in this part of the country for want of money, but everything else plenty. Wheat is cheap, bringing 50 1/2 per bushel at the Carrollton mill. there is no sale at all for oats and corn. Pork sells from 3 to 4 cents per pound.
We wrote to Wilson last month, but have not heard from him. Ruth has no children and lives with her husband's parents, and hard times don't trouble them. Crawford has lived with Thomas Scott, the past summer, and is still there. Thomas' son William lives with his uncle at Carrollton and is keeping store for him. Hard times do't bother them.
I want you to tell us how Elizabeth Scott is and if she intends to come to this country. If she does, we will go for her. We would have sent for her last fall, but we had no word whether she would come. One of our horses has been lame since last spring, and we had to buy another. I bourhg tone last spring a year ago and left a colt. We have it yet.
Times seem to go hard with us, but God spares our health and we are hopes that in another year we will get through our difficulties. Our crop last year did not turn out. The flys hurt it very much and having so far to go to reap it that it will not do much more than cost. The fly is in the wheat also this year. We have 30 acres of wheat in this fall. Barnes put it in himself, for I was no help to him and the Lord knows if I ever will be well. Your mother has good health, but has been in poor health since coming to this country. For my part I don't know whether I will ever be able to go to the fields again or not. I want you to let us know how your father-in-law is, as well as all our old neighbors. Give our love to Elizabeth and Catherine and all her children."8

Crawford Scott1

M, d. before 1788
ChartsJoseph Clayton Malloure's Pedigree Chart
Crawford Scott was born in Naria, Inniskeel Parish, Donegal County, Ireland.1,2

His forebears were sturdy Scottsmen of the peasant class, whose ideas of independence in religious thought and faith was sufficiently well developed as to permit of no compromise. Choosing not to compromise, they left their native Scotland (1650 to 1665), along with hundreds of others and migrated over into northern Ireland. Although a Catholic country, North Ireland was more tolerant towards those of the Protestant faith.

These Scotsmen made the north of Ireland Protestant and their descendants have kept it so ..., all other sections of the Island are, and always have been Catholic. In 1720, Crawford was living in Naris, Inniskeel Parish, Donegal County, Ireland. He was the first historian of this branch of the Scott family. The records were possibly written between 1720 and 1760. The fact that he could write was unusual since the number was few who could read and write in 1720.1

Crawford Scott married Elizabeth.1 Crawford Scott was survived by by his wife Elizabeth, four other sons; Thomas, John, William, and Crawford II, also a daughter Rebecca.1

Crawford Scott died before 1788 in Ireland.2
