Henry Charles Conner was born on 10 February 1842 in Cass County, Michigan.5,2,3,6 He was the son of James Conner and Calista Cook.1,3 In the census of 1 August 1850 in Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan, Henry appears in the household of Jas Connor as Henry Connor. He is seven years old and was born in Michigan.7 In the census of 28 July 1860 in Porter, Cass County, Michigan, Henry appears in the household of James Conner as Henry Conner. He is 18 years old and was born in Michigan.8 Henry Charles Conner survived the death of his father, James Conner, who died on 8 October 1862.9

Henry Charles Conner married Mary Jane Hartman, daughter of John Hartman and Wife of John Hartman Mary, on 6 March 1870 in Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan. They were married by John Hartman, the Justice of the Peace and Elizabeth Klinger and Electa Wiley were witnesses. Henry was 27 and was living in St. Joseph County at the time and Mary Jane Hartman was 20 and was a resident of Porter Township.10,6,11,12 In the census of 13 August 1870 in Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan, Henry Charles Conner is listed as the head of a household which included the following household member, Mary J. Conner. He is 27 years old, working as a farm laborer, and was born in Michigan. He was married this past year in the month of March and is living near Elizabeth Conner, age 53.10 In the census of 22 June 1880 at Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan, Henry Charles Conner appears as a head of household. Living with him is his wife, Jane Conner, his sons, Elmer Conner, John Conner and James Conner, his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Conner. He is 37 years old, a farmer, and was born in Michigan, as was his father. His mother was born in Ohio. He is living near Elizabeth Conner, age 63, believed to be his stepmother.13

John Hartman, Mary Jane's father, owned in section 12 of south Porter Township, a farm of 240 acres and another 80 acres a few miles from road 119. The 80 acres was the farm that all the Conner children were born on, except Hattie. Henry Conner farmed this for John Hartman. He had an agreement with his father-in-law that Henry was to get the farm when he died. Because John Hartman could not read or write, he never signed any papers. When he died, his son Henry Hartman took the farm of 80 acres and divided the 240 acres between his sisters, Mary Jane Hartman Conner and Lydia Hartman Sager. The 240 ares were not as good of land as the 80. Henry Conner told this story to his son's wife (John Conner's wife) and to their daughter, Marie Conner Jones. Apparently he stated never do what he did; work another man's place on his promise you would get it when he was gone.14 In the census of 11 June 1900 in Porter Township, Cass County, Michigan, Henry Charles Conner appears as a head of household, which include his wife, Mary J. Conner, his sons, James Conner, Elmer Conner, Levi Conner, Howard Roy Conner and Charles Conner, his daughters, Electa Ann Conner and Hattie Mae Conner. He is 57 years old, working as a farmer, and was born February 1843 in Michigan. His parents were also born in Michigan. He has been married for 30 years.15

In 1912, Henry and Mary moved to Constantine, St. Joseph County, Michigan.16,17

Henry Charles Conner died on 17 December 1913 in St. Joseph County, Michigan, at age 71.18,12 He is buried in the Constantine Cemetery located in Constantine, St. Joseph County, Michigan.18,19

MotherAmanda S. Carter7,5,8 b. 1832, d. 17 Oct 1878
Parker Emerson Carter was born on 27 February 1854 in New York.6,7,5 He was the son of Ichabod Gararas Carter and Amanda S. Carter.6,7,5,8 In the census of 7 August 1860 in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York, Parker appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Parker M. Carter. He is six years old and was born in New York.6

When Emerson was eight years old, he went to live with his grandfather and remained with him unitl he was 15 years old. He learned a trade while living with his grandfather and then went back to live with his parents who then lived in Yaphank, Long Island.9 In the census of 10 August 1870 in Brookhaven Township, Suffolk County, New York, Parker appears in the household of Ichabod Gararas Carter as Parker E. Carter. He is 17 years old and was born in New York.1 In 1876, Parker Emerson Carter moved with his parents to Delevan, Faribault County, Minnesota; They operated a farm for about three years around Delevan.7,10,11

Emerson's parents moved to South Dakota around 1878, but Emerson stayed behind in Minneasota.12,13

Parker Emerson Carter married Ida Smith between 1878 and 1879 in Minnesota.14,15,16 Parker Emerson Carter was living in Wisconsin when his mother, Amanda died in South Dakota on 17 October 1878.17 In October 1879 their son, Ray Carter, was born in Minnesota.18 Parker and Ida moved with their family to McCook County, South Dakota. They moved in the spring of 1880.13

In the census of 7 June 1880 at McCook County, Dakota Territory, Emerson Carter, shown as Emerson Carter, appears as a head of household. Living with him is his wife, Ida Smith, his son, Ray Carter. Emerson is 36 years old, born in New York along with his parents and is a farmer. He is living next to Ichabod Carter's household.18 On 23 March 1888 at McCook County, South Dakota, Parker Emerson Carter purchased 160 acreas of land. It is likely that he filed for this patent years earlier.19 Land patents are document that transfer government land to individuals. The land Ichabod purchased was for cash, but may have had similar rules as the land patents throught the Homestead Law. The Homestead Law, provided for 160 acres of federal land to be allotted to heads of households, widows, or single persons over 21. The law was intended for those who were landless or owned less than 160 acres. The law required that the property be resided upon, built upon, and cultivated over a five-year period. When people located a desired piece of land, they filed a claim for the property chosen in person through the local land office. The final application for the certificate of patent had to be made within two years after the completion of the residency requirements, or the claim was no longer valid. Once the final certificate was received, it entitled the claimant to a patent for his homestead.

Parker Emerson Carter has not been found on the census of 1900. In the census of April 1910 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota, Emerson Carter, shown as Emerson Carter, appears as a head of household which include his wife, Ida Carter, his sons, Floyd Smith Carter and Ralph E. Carter, his daughter, Ethel R. Carter . He is 56 years old, married 31 years, and was born in New York. He is working as a contractor for the city and owns his own home. Ralph is shown as his son, but he is believe to be his son-in-law because he is also shown as being married to Emerson's daughter Ethel.20

Emerson gave a statement to an Inspector of the Interior Department on 6 May 1925 concerning his father's pension. In the statement he said that he was 71 years old, a carpenter and a contractor, and that his address was 1707 South Prairie Avenue, Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.21
