     Joel Ryan was born on 20 November 1822 in Campbell County, Tennessee.1 He was the son of Martha Holt.1,2

     Joel Ryan married Jane Creekmore, daughter of Horatio Gates Creekmore and Lurena Meadors, on 19 October 1843 in Campbell County, Tennessee.1 Joel Ryan witnessed the death of Elizabeth Rogers circa May 1852 in Whitley County, Kentucky; Joel Ryan and Horatio G. Creekmore were Administrations and Joshua Stephen, Elisha Stephens and Gidian Gilreath were apponted by the court to review and appraise her personal estate.3 Children listed in the 1860 census; born in Kentucky Cisara P. (male), age 15, and Jacob L., age 13. Born in Tennessee Roratre J. (male), age 11, Lanisa, (female) age 9, Mary S., age 7, Joseph, age 5, Henderson C., age 2, and David H, age one month.4 In the census of 27 June 1860 at Huntsville, Scott County, Tennessee, Joel Ryan, shown as Joel Ryan, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Jane Creekmore. He is 37 years old, a farmer with real esate valued at $500, and was born in Tennessee. His personal estate is valued at $735. Nine children are listed in this census and he is living next to Joseph Ryan, age 74.4

     Joel Ryan died on 4 July 1896 in Williamsburg, Whitley County, Kentucky, at age 73.1
