Nancy Buchanan1

F
Many people have tried to closely tie their own lines into the Presidents line based on family legends and wishful thinking. Most of these family rumors tend to be untrue and mainly came about during the 1930's "Buchanan Estate Scam" where letters were send out to anyone with the name Buchanan claiming that President Buchanan was at one time head of the Clan (blatantly untrue). Some of these letters stated that if you could clain close kinship to the President that your share of the estate would be larger. For anyone to even claim to be a third cousin of the President, they must be descended form Thomas Buchanan, of Donegal (or sometimes referred to a Thomas, of Rathmelton).2 Nancy was working as Opened a boarding house. in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.3

Henry Bricker was born on 26 February 1822.2,1 He was the son of David Bricker and Mary Sampsel.2,1 In the 1830 census in Center, Columbiana County, Ohio, Henry Bricker is assumed to be enumerated with David Bricker.3 Henry Bricker survived the death of his father, David Bricker, who died circa December 1830.4 Paul Sampsel became legal guardian for Jason Bricker and Henry Bricker, minors of David Bricker. Court records were signed by Paul Sampsel and John Bricker.5 Henry Bricker was a witness John Bricker became guardian, after Paul Sampsell died in August 1831. with John N. Bricker.4

Is this the Henry Bricker that married Mary Ann Murphy? I believe his is. Henry named his first son, David, which is the name of this Henry's father. He named his second son, Arnold, which is his wife's father's name. He named his third son Daniel Jason. Henry Bricker's only sibling was Jason. Jason used the same naming pattern and Jason's third son is named Daniel Henry Bricker. Mary Ann Murphy's father Arnold Murphy was living in Center Township, Columbiana County in 1840. Columbiana County is where Henry Bricker and Mary Ann Murphy were married. Both of these families appear in Scioto County, Ohio in 1850. It is for these reasons, I am going with the assumption that this Henry Bricker is the brother of Jason Bricker and the son of David Bricker.

Henry Bricker married Mary Ann Murphy, daughter of Arnold Murphy and Wife of Arnold Murphy Ann, on 4 January 1844 in Columbiana County, Ohio.6 In the census of 13 August 1850 at Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Henry Bricker, shown as Henry Bricker, is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Mary Ann Murphy, David Bricker, Samuel L. He is working as a laborer and living next to Arnold Murphy, age 50.7 In the census of 13 August 1850 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Mary appears in the household of an unknown person as Mary A. Bricker. She is 26 years old and was born in Ohio. Living in this household also is Sophia Murphy, age 13, which is assumed to be Mary Ann's sister.7 In the census of 13 August 1850 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, David appears in the household of an unknown person as David Bricker. He is four years old and was born in Ohio.7 In the census of 13 August 1850 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Samuel appears in the household of an unknown person as Samuel L. Bricker. He is four years and a half years old and was born in Ohio.7 In the census of 13 August 1850 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Sophia appears in the household of an unknown person as Sophia Murhpy. She is 13 years old and was born in Ohio. She is living in Henry Bricker's household, but also living next to Arnold and Ann Murphy, assumed to be her parents.7 In the census of 26 July 1870 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Henry Bricker, shown as Henry Bricker, is listed as the head of household which included the following household members; David Bricker, William Smith Bricker, George Bricker, Eliza Bricker, Rebecca Ann Bricker and Mary Ann Murphy. He is shown as 48 years old, born in Ohio, and working as a laborer. He list that his value of his personal property is $120 and that he has no real property.8 In the census of 26 July 1870 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, Mary appears in the household of an unknown person as Mary A. Bricker. She is 46 years old and was born in Ohio. She is listed as keeping house.8 In the census of 26 July 1870 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, David appears in the household of an unknown person as David Bricker. He is 24 years old, born in Ohio, and is a farm laborer. He cannot write.8 In the census of 26 July 1870 in Jefferson, Scioto County, Ohio, William appears in the household of an unknown person as William Bricker. He is 17 years old, born in Ohio, and working as a farm laborer.
