John Conner was one of the prominen, influential men of the community, and his home was the rendezvous of he English speaking inhabitants. When the war of 1812 broke out, the hostility of the Indians, who generally sympthized with the British, was such that Conner found it wise each evening to take his wife and children to the home of James Conner, on the opposite side of the river. James Conner being of the Richard Conner family of the Moravin settlement, was favored by the Indianas, and his home was a safe refuge. Soon after the British secured Detroit, upon the surrender of gen. Hull, John Conner went to Detoit to market and was held there by the British. Learning this, Mrs. Conner, with her five children, got into a canoe and went to Detroit, and there made her home until the close of the war. John Conner was sent to Canada and was absent or nearly a year, but later returned by way of Ohio and joined the army, rendering excellent service. At the close of the war in 1815 he returned to his farm, there to find desolation. He remained upon the farm until about 1844.14,13 On 8 November 1816 their son, John C.      William Conner was born on 14 April 1802 in Michigan.3 He was the son of John Conner and Alice Thorn.2 William Conner has not been found on the census of 1810 at Michigan. There was no census taken in Michigan in 1810, as it was still a territory. In 1810, William Conner moved with his parents to Harrison Township, Macomb County, Michigan.4

William Conner married Susanne Cecilia Connor on 29 July 1830 in Ste. Anne Church, Macomb County, Michigan. They were married according to the rites of the Catholic Church. The Groom is a resident of the Clinton River. Witnesses were Henry Conner and John Conner.5,6,7,1,8,9

William Conner, shown as W. Conner, was listed as a head of a family on the 1840 census Harrison Township, Macomb County, Michigan. It is assumed that he is the male shown as between 30 and 40 years old. Living nearby are C. Martin, G. Proson, Wm. Stevens, and Porter. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also in this household, John H. Conner, a male under 5 years old, Henry O. Conner, a male age 5 to 10 years old, Nancy Conner, a female under 5 years old, Susanne Cecilia Connor, a female age 30 to 40 years old.10 In the census of 11 September 1850 at Erin, Macomb County, Michigan, William Conner is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Nancy Conner, Susanne Cecilia Connor, Henry O. Conner, John H. Conner, Margret Conner and Josephine Conner. He is 48 years old, working at a hotel, and was born in Michigan. His real estate is valued at $3000.11

William Conner died on 2 August 1854 in Clinton Township, Macomb County, Michigan, at age 52.3,7 (an unknown value.)3 His estate was probated in 1854 at Macomb County, Michigan; On 11 June 1856, a change to the William Conner's probate is requested. The records indicated that Henry Conner, son of Susan Conner of Macomb County and John H. Conner, brother of Susan would like to represent Susan because she is not competent to take care of herself.12 His estate was probated on 7 April 1856 at Macomb County, Michigan; On 7 April 1856, the probate records show that Henry Conner, George Ralain, and L. B. Chapaton request to obtain a license to sell real estate that is owned by the minors of William Conner, deceased. They need to see the real estate to pay for the minors debts and settle William Conner's Estate.13,14 In March 1858 Nancy Conner indicates that John is her brother and that he worked on the farm for three years. She also states that John may have been sick for six months. Also at this time, John H. Conner states that John worked for at least three years on the farm and that Henry was around some of the time. Also at this time Susan Connor makes a claim against the Estate in the amount of $400 for support of her children after William's death. Nancy Conner & John Conner, state that they are heirs and that they think their mother, Susan, is entitled to the money and list minor children as Nancy, John, Alice, Margaret, Maria A., Cornelia, & Josephine.14

The boat was the first steamboat on the upper Great Lakes and built for passenger service between Black Rock, New York, and Detroit. She entered service in the summer of 1818, but with her low horsepower, she was unable to buck the current on the Niagara River and had to be towed by a span of oxen from Black Rock to Buffalo. The steamer was a cross between a steamer and a sailing craft. She carried two high masts and was fitted with a square-rigged foresail. The fares between Buffalo and Detroit were $18 for cabin passengers and $7 for steerage. When full, the steamboat carried about 150 passengers. Her last season was in 1821.
