Wanders 70 Years, Then Meets Sister: Dec. 9 - "Well, well, you have changed!" observed John Conner, 90-year-old civil war veteran of Oakdale, to his sister, Mrs. W. E. Fiero, 80 years old, of Detroit, when the two met at the home of Mrs. Fiero's daughter-in-law, Mrs. W. E. Fiero, at 4217 Dalton avenue.

"That's right, Brother John, I have change." shyly remarked his sister, "And you don't look like you did when I last saw you. The aged couple are enjoying their reunion with the delight of childhood. Many times in the 70 years that passed since the brother and sister parted, the two have been within a short distance of each other. Circumstances on each occasion, they said, kept them apart. At last, the sister decided to come to California to visit her son and other relatives. She wrote to Mr. Conner in Oakdale and he eagerly arranged to visit in Los Angeles at the same time.

The young lad was always an adventurous spirit. After he left his native heath in Conners Creek, Mich., the war came and with others of like spirit he enlisted and spent four years on the battle line. When Lee surrendered and a nation returned to peaceful pursuits the youngster yearned for a broader experience and kept on roaming. He lived a while in the middle west and about 59 years ago came to California where he started to farm.

Mr. Conner is a descendant of two of Michigan's earliest families having similar names, the one Conner, on his paternal grandfather's side and the other Connors, on the side of his maternal grandmother. The Conners settled on the banks of Connors' Creek when Michigan was still a wildernes, inhabited chiefly by chippewas. Henry Connors, who was owner of a large part of the land which is now Detroit, was for many years Indian agent for the federal government. The Indians called Henry Connors "No-Was-Kim-Dip," or Whitehead, on account of his blond hair. Mr. Connor's wife died six years ago at Oakdale. He has three daughters; Mrs. Margaret Ordway, of Oakdale, Mrs. May Madison, of Fresno, and Mrs. Jessie Athenton, of Jamestown; and two sons, J. H. of Oakdale, and J. T. Connor, of Stockton.17 In the census of 8 January 1920 in Jamestown, Tuolumne County, California, he is listed as the father-in-law of Frank Alberton. His name appears as John Conner. He is 85 years old, a widow, and was born in Michigan. His parents were also born in Michigan. No occupation is given.18

Margaret Conner married Wright Fiero after 1864.12,5

T. Connor, of Stockton.13

Nellie Connor was also known as Helen Conner.2

Nellie Connor was born on 5 February 1859 in Michigan.2,4 She was the daughter of Henry O. Conner and Anna Cranage.2,3 In the census of 17 August 1860 in Clinton Township, MaComb County, Michigan, Nellie appears in the household of Henry Conner as Helen Conner. She is 11 years old and was born in Michigan.6

Nellie Connor died on 21 December 1886 in Macomb County, Michigan, at age 27 of internal injuries caused by a fall.4,7

OBITUARY: Miss Nellie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Conner, died, after a brief illness of only a few weeks, Tuesday morning at half past two o'clock. She had been confined to the bed for about three weeks. Some weeks prior to her illness she fell and received internal injuries which was the direct cause of her death. Miss Conner was 27 years of age and had been a bright pretty girl from childhood. She had a large circle of friends and acquaintances in this city, Detroit and other places, and we know of no other young lady in this vicinity, who will be any more missed from the social circle than Miss Nellie Conner.

No one can describe the feelings of the writer who is called upon to chronicle the death of this estimable and accomplished young lady. We feel more like joining the mourning relatives and sharing their deep and awful sorrow. Hope was entertained all along that her life might be saved and up to last Friday she was not considered particularily dangerously ill. But Saturday she passed a day of extreme suffering and from that time grew worse and was dying. All day and through the dreary night her parents, sisters and brothers and a number of devoted friends watched by the bedride of the dying girl and did all they could to alleviate her sufferenings as she lay in a state bordering on unconsciousness. She died peacefully.

The funeral services were held today at the house, the Rev. Mr. Ashman, of Detroit, officiating.8
