William Bradford

     William Bradford was elected governor of Plymouth in 1621 and was re-elected nearly every year thereafter. William moved to Leiden, Holland. Here, he remained for eleven years.

William Bradford: He was one of the leaders of the English Puritan Separatists who we now call "The Pilgrims." He arrived in America on the Mayflower in 1620 and served some 35 years as governor of the colony.


     William Bradford was born on 19 March 1589 in Austerfield, Yorkshire County, England.1 He was the son of William Bradford and Alice Hanson.

     After his father died, he lived with his grandfather, William, until his grandfather died when he was six. His mother died when he was seven. Orphaned both from parents and grandparents, William and his older sister Alice were raised by their uncle Robert Bradford. William. William Bradford survived the death of his father, William Bradford, who died in 1591. William Bradford survived the death of his mother, Alice Hanson, who died in 1597. In 1608, William moved to Amsterdam. William Bradford joined a group of Separatists that fled from England in fear of persecution.

     William Bradford married Dorothy May on 10 December 1613 in Amsterdam.2 William Bradford and Dorothy May emigrated in 1620. They sailed on the Mayflower and the ship made landfall on November 11 at the tip of Cape Cod. William Bradford survived the death of his wife, Dorothy May, who died on 7 December 1620 in Massachusetts.

     William Bradford married Alice Carpenter, daughter of Alexander Carpenter, on 14 August 1623 in Southworth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.1

     William Bradford died on 9 May 1657 in Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, at age 68.1,3

     Dorothy May was born circa 1597 in Wisbeech, Cambridge County, England.1

     Dorothy May married first William Bradford, son of William Bradford and Alice Hanson, on 10 December 1613 in Amsterdam.1 Dorothy May and William Bradford emigrated in 1620. They sailed on the Mayflower and the ship made landfall on November 11 at the tip of Cape Cod. Dorothy May was survived by.

     Dorothy May died on 7 December 1620 in Provincetown Harbor, Massachusetts.1

     John Bradford was born between 1615 and 1617 in Leiden, Holland.1 He was the son of William Bradford and Dorothy May.1 John Bradford survived the death of his mother, Dorothy May, who died on 7 December 1620 in Massachusetts.

     John did not accompany his parents on the Mayflower in 1620. In 1627 John came to Plymouth and moved to Duxbury sometime before 1645. He finally settled in Norwich, Connecticut about 1652.
