OBITUARY: Bricker, at his home, 20 North Washington Street, Saturday evening at 4 o'clock, August 23 1902, Dr. Samuel W. Bricker, aged 82 years. Death came after an illness of several weeks with a severe attack of the flux. The deceased showed remarkable strength and fortitude during the final hours of his illness, directing his own medical treatment to within ten minutes of his death.

Dr. Samuel Bricker was born in New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio, July 8 1820. He lived with his parents on the farm, until he attained the age of sixteen years. At that early age he took up the vocation of school teaching, which he followed for four years. At the age of twenty-four, he entered the Quaker Literary school, at Ashland, a denominational school, then considered an institution of high order, Mareus A. Hanna was a schoolmate of the deceased at that place. Our subject studied here for one year, when he entered the Cincinnati Eclectic School of Medicine. He followed the course of study here for two years.

This was the day of stage coaches and by this means of transportation the young medical student made his way back and forth to his home, for his vacations. His vacations were spent in diligent study under the tutelage of Dr. Thompson, of Ashland, then a renowned physician and practitioner of the west. In 1844, Dr. Bricker with his diploma and an already through practical knowledge of medicine, came to Tiffin and located in the office in which he practiced until the time of his death. The doctor was a fine type of physical manhood and suffered practically no illness during his long lifetime. In 1900, he was stricken with acute pneumonia and it was the result of this sickness that aided considerably in bringing about the doctor's death.

During his long practice in Seneca County, he had learned to know every lane and byway. His favorite means of travel around the county was horseback. Dr. Bricker was a visitor in the majority of homes in the county in the ante modern times.

Our subject was married to Jemimah Kelly, May 4, 1847. To this union were born four children, Homer, Frank, Allie and Mattie. All of these have departed this life except Homer; Mattie Bricker was married to George DeWitt, in 1874. She died three years later. Homer was married to Mrs. Lovina Riggles in 1878. One son lives from this union, Harry Bricker, who now resides at Milan, Ohio. The deceased had five brothers, Rezin, Joseph, John, Abram, and Nicholas, of these, three survive, Dr. John Bricker, a practicing physician at Fostoria, Dr. Abram, a practicing physician located at Arcadia and Nicholas, a farmer of Wood County. Dr. S.W. Bricker had three sisters, Nora, Hannah, and Adella; the last named being the only survivor, now Mrs. Edward Cook, of Findley.

In Feb. 1874, the first wife of the deceased died and on March 25, 1897, he was married to Mrs. Martha C. Swigart, of Cleveland, Dr. Robert Swigart of this city and G.F. Swigart, of Cleveland are sons of the latter. Dr. Bricker was the oldest doctor of Seneca County. His was a family of physicians. By his death the community loses one of the best and most highly respected of her citizens. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, from his late home, on North Washington Street, Rev J.W. Hyslop, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, officiating. A quartette from the Episcopal choir, assisted by Miss Holderman, will render musical selections. Interment at Green Lawns.1
He is buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery located in Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio.10

OBITUARY: At Rest in Death - Dr. S. W. Bricker peacefully passes away - Was oldest Medical Practitioner in Seneca County and Perhaps in this section of Ohio.

Dr. Samuel W. Bricker is dead. After a long lifetime of unselfish labor, the patriarch of Seneca county's medical fraternity peacefully passed away at his home, No. 20, North Washington street, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at the advanced age of 82 years 1 month and 15 days.
Bowel complaint was the cause of his death. The deceased had been ill three weeks to the day. During his time he contracted an attack of quinzy, the ravages of which he successfully combated, and bright hopes were entertained for his complete recovery. But on last Friday the heart action commenced to grow weaker and from that time he gradually sank until he passed to the great beyond at the hour above stated.

Dr. Bricker bore the distinction of being the oldest medical practitioner in this county, and perhaps this section of the state, both in age and in years of application to his profession. He was born in Columbiana county, July 8, 1820. Of his family there were nine children, of whom  but four now survive.are Dr. John Bricker of Fostoria; Dr. Abraham Bricker of Arcadia; Nicholas Bricker, who resides in Wood County; and Mrs. Adele Cook, of Findlay.

After preparing himself for his profesion he came to Tiffin in 1844, and soon after opened an office on the very spot where he died. Thus his active medical career extended over a period of 58 years. On May 4, 1847, he was united in marriage to Jemima Kelley. To this union were born four children: Dr. Homer J. now an inmate of the Sandusky Soldiers home; Mrs. Mattie Dewitt, Miss Alice, and Frank, all three deceased.  Mrs. Bricker Died Feb. 13, 1894. and on March 25, 1897, he was again married to Martha C. Swigart, who survives him. There is also one grandson, Harry Bricker, now residing in Milan.

Dr. Bricker was on of, if not the best known physician in Seneca county. He belonged to that band of pioneers in his profession who worked rather for the love of administering to the afflicted than for the mere desire of pecuniary gain, and hence he never accumulated the share of the world's goods which might have been his.

Coming to this county when doctors were few, and when the ax of the settler had scarcely commenced to make inroads on the native forests, his labors took him over a territory whose radius extends 20 miles in each direction from Tiffin, often where the roads dwindled into little more than cow paths and where dangers unknown today lurked.
Of the trials of these early days, the present generation has but little conception. But those of that hardy generation who yet survive, and who  knew Dr. Bricker, all testify to his unselfish devotion to his duty then as in the latter days of his life.

Most prominent of those now living who were contemporaneous with the deceased in those early days are Dr. I.L. St. John, Hon. W.P. Noble, Edward Childs, J.M. Naylor, Jacob Scheiber and Dr. E. J. McCollum. A remarkable coincidence regarding three of these old pioneer friends, Messrs. Noble, Childs and the deceased, is that they have resided together in adjoining residences for a period of over 45 years. Dr. McCollum, who has succeeded Dr. Bricker as the Nestor of Seneca county physicians, knew the deceased form more than 50 years. In speaking of the passing of his predecessor, he pays an earnest and loving tribute to his dead friend: "I knew him in those old days, when to be a physician and to do the work required of the fraternity in this county called for an exercise, of untiring energy, super-human endurance, and something akin to physical bravery, and I never knew my friend to fail in any of these requisites. His integrity and high moral attributes then, as always, were beyond reproach. So high did he stand as a physician that his name became, and is today a household word in many homes all over this section."
In later years, Dr. Bricker was not so well known outside of the membership of his profession and of the homes wherein he was interested. He stood , seemingly, as  a monument of a bygone, generation, neither seeking  not avoiding new friends, apparently living within himself, and spending all of his leisure time within the home circle.
With his declining years he found it impossible to administer to his extensive practice alone, and bout three years ago associated with him his step son, Dr. R. E.  Swigart. But even when he must have felt the eventide of his life drawing nigh, he did not seek the rest he had so richly earned. up to the very first day of his fatal illness he was actively engaged in his duties making eight professional calls that day.
Now that death has brought to an end this life of tireless usefulness and unselfish devotion to duty, there are many who will miss the patriarchal figure of the venerable doctor, which was so familiar to all as it came slowly down the street, medicine case in one hand and the indispensable cane in the other. Those in the homes wherein he so skillfully administered; those who live and admire the venerable representatives of a bygone generation; and those members of his fireside, who loved him as a companion and venerated herm as a father, will all cherish the memory of him who has at last gone to his reward.
