Apparently her mother was a cousin to John Hancock who signed the Declaration of Independence, but a connection hasn't been made yet.3,2,4 She was the daughter of Martin Holloway and Harriet Hancock.2 Harriette Hancock Holloway survived the death of her mother, Harriet Hancock, who died in 1842. Mary Ann Cutmore and Rosa Garner immigrated in 1850 to New York; They departed from Bristol, England and arrived in New York on 19 October 1850. There were five Holloway's listed on this ship. MaryAnn, age 40 (Martin's wife), Rosa, age 18 (believed to be Martin's daughter, Frances, born 1833), Porcha, age 14 (believed to be Martin's daughter, Porti, born 1836a), Rosa, age 12 (believed to be MaryAnn's daughter by a previous marriage), and Agnes, age 9 (believe to be Martin's daughter, Harriet, born 1841.) Martin and his daughter, Julia arrived a few days early on a different ship.5 Harriette Hancock Holloway survived the death of Mary Ann Cutmore between 1850 and 1857; her husband, Martin, her step children, Frances, Portia, Julia, and Harriet, and it is assumed she was survived by her daughter, Rosa. In the census of 25 June 1860 in Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, Harriette appears in the household of Martin Haloway as Harriet Holaway. She is 18 years old and was born in England.6

She is 28 years old, keeps house, and was born in England. Her parents are of foreign birth.20 Circa 1871, Horace and Harriette moved with their family to Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Clupps of Vernon.5,10,1 Immediately after getting married, Andrew and Lucy, moved to Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan to make their home. They moved with the Weston family and arrived in Pulaski 8 April 1859.5,10,11 On 5 April 1859, Lucy Jane Weston moved with her parents to Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan; His son Edgar tells that his father had a farm of 70 acres in Vernon when he desired a change and was influenced by Horace Greely of the New York Tribune, who wrote "Go West, young man, go West!" At 2pm on 5 April 1859, their familiy took a boat down the Connecticut River and arrived in New York City the following morning. They were then taken by Omnibus across North River Ferry and then traveled by the New York Central Railroad to Jonesville arriving the morning of April 8th. They still had 15 miles of muddy and corduroy road to travel to reach their final destination. (A corduroy road was a long series of small saw-logs laid side by side and were used deliberately over streches of swampy ground making it passable. The logs were laid in a pattern that reminded people of corduroy.) Edgar remembers that their father procured a canopy top three-seated wagon for the family, and a wagon for their numerous trunks. They reached their destination by going through 1/2 miles of woods to cleared land of about 100 acres to an ordinary log house, the first one they had ever seen. Edgar remembered the disappointment and the homesickness at the surroundings and he remembers all of the older children declared they would not live there.9,12 On 20 April 1859 their son, William Herbert Cross, was born in Pulaski Township, Jackson County, Michigan. William was born only 12 days after arriving from Connecticut; He was born only 12 days after his parents arrived from Connecticut.13,14,15,16,17,18 In the census of 1 August 1860 in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan, Lucy appears in the household of Andrew Jackson Cross as Jane Cross. She is 22 years old and was born in Connecticut.19 Their second child, Agnes Eloise, was born on 26 August 1861 in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan.16,20 During the Civil War, Lucy Jane Weston's husband signed up with the Michigan G Battery, 1st light artillery company on 28 November 1861 at Mosherville, Hillsdale County, Michigan.10,6,9

She survived the death of her husband, Andrew Jackson Cross, who died on 19 October 1862 in the Civil War, Oakhill, Ohio. After her husband died, Lucy Cross returned to Connecticut.5

On 28 April 1863, Lucy Cross filed a claim with the Pension Office and it was received and respectfully referred to the Adjutant General, for official evidence of service and death of Andrew J. Cross. Lucy Jane Cross, a resident of Coverty, Tolland County appeared before the Probate Court, stating that she was the widow of Andrew J. Cross who was a private in the 7th Michigan Battery and by reason of his death she was granted a pension of eight dollars per month and an additional two dollars per month for each child until they reached the age of 16 years.21,22

In the census of 14 June 1870 in Coverntry, Tolland County, Connecticut, Lucy Cross is listed as the head of a household which included the following household member, William Herbert Cross. She is 37 years old, keeping house, and was born in Connecticut. Her daughter, Agnes, is living with Lucy's father in Michigan.23,24 In the census of 9 June 1880 at Coventry Township, Tolland County, Connecticut, Lucy Cross, shown as Lucy J. Cross, appears as a head of household. Living with her is, her daughter, Agnes Eloise Cross. She is 42 years old and was born in Connecticut, as were her parents. She is a widow and is working in a woolen mill. Her son, William, is living with Lucy's brother, Frank, in Michigan.25

In May 1881, Lucy moved to Sun Prairie Township, McCook County, South Dakota.5,26,9,27 The Dakota Territory was formally established in 1861. The legislation creating the new territory was signed by President James Buchanan. The new territory included the present states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and most of Wyoming. In 1874 gold was discovered around the present day Custer and the Black Hills gold rush began. The failure of the Army to keep the whites out of the Hills angered the Sioux and war began in 1876. The most notable event of the war was the defeat of Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn in June. In 1877, a treaty was signed and the Black Hills were given back to the United States and the Indians return to the reservations. The next ten years was called the Great Dakota Boom and settlers pour into the Dakotas.

By 1883, Montana and Wyoming were separated into their own territories and the capital of the Dakotas was shifted to the north due to the northern growth in population. This started a movement to split the territory. Several attempts were made, but it wasn't until February 22, 1889, when President Cleveland signed the Omnibus Bill creating the States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington. It must have been one of President Cleveland's last acts as President, having lost the 1888 election. Benjamin Harrison took over as President March 4, 1889 and on November 2nd, 1889 the Dakota Territory formally ceased to exist when President Harrison signed the documents formally admitting North and South Dakota to the Union as the 39th and 40th states.

Between 1881 and 1883 at Sun Prairie Township, McCook County, South Dakota, Lucy Cross pre-emted 160 acres of Government land as a Soldier's Widow. Homestead certificate was signed 24 October 1888 for land in the SE 1/2 of Section 22, township 104N, Range 54W of the 5th prime meridian. According to the rules of the Homestead Act of 20 May 1862, you had to be settled on your land for five years and up to seven years before receiving your patent. Therefore she must have settled on this land sometime before October 1883, but probably not before 1881. Her daughter also received a land patent for 160 acres in the same section. Her daughter's land governing authority is dated April 24, 1820 as a Sale-Cash Entry.5,26,9,28

Land patents are documents that transfer government land to individuals. The Homestead Law provided for 160 acres of federal land to be allotted to heads of households, widows, or single persons over 21. The law was intended for those who were landless or owned less than 160 acres. The law required that the property be resided upon, built upon, and cultivated over a five-year period. When people located a desired piece of land, they filed a claim for the property chosen in person through the local land office. The final application for the certificate of patent had to be made within two years after the completion of the residency requirements, or the claim was no longer valid. Once the final certificate was received, it entitled the claimant to a patent for his homestead.

She survived the death of her daughter, Agnes Eloise Carter, who died on 8 November 1899 in Davis, South Dakota. In the census of 4 June 1900 in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, she is listed in the household and as the mother of William Herbert Cross. Her name appears as Lucy Cross. She is 62 years old, a widow, and was born in Connecticut, as were her parents. Her birthday is given as August 1837. Also living in this household are her two granddaughters, Ruth and Lorna Carter, and her grandson, Charles Carter.29 In the census of 20 April 1910 in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, she is listed in the household and as the mother of William Herbert Cross. Her name appears as Lucy J. Cross. She is 72 years old, a widow, and was born in Connecticut, as were her parents. She is the mother of two children, but only one that is still living.30

On 8 September 1916, Lucy received an increase in her widow's pension. She was now entitled to $20 per month.21 In the census of 2 January 1920 in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, she is listed in the household and as the mother of William Herbert Cross. Her name appears as Lucy J. Cross. She is 82 years old, a widow, and was born in Connecticut. Her parents' birth location is given as Connecticut. Also living in this household is her granddaughter, Rosa Carter, age 29.31

Lucy Jane Weston died on 10 March 1922 in Salem, McCook County, South Dakota, at age 84 of an illness. She had become ill the previous September, which lasted for five to six weeks. She became ill again in December lasting through January and finally a third attack lasting about two weeks culminated in her death. She was 84 years, 7 months, 1 day.5,6,32 She is buried Wildwood Cemetery, Salem, McCook County, South Dakota. Funeral Services were held on 13 March 1922 at the Presbyterian Church at 2pm by Rev. S. L. Snapp.5,6

OBITUARY: Another pioneer of Salem answered the final summons, Friday, March 10, 1922, at 8:50 o'clock in the morning, when Mrs. Lucy J. Cross, succumbed to a two (?) illness, and passed to her eternal reward. While Mrs. Cross had been gradually failing since the waning summer months last year, her condition, while serious did not cause alarm until about a week or ten days before her death. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon of Monday, and were conducted by Rev. S. L. Snapp. The remains were laid to rest in Wildwood cemetery. Lucy Jane Weston was born in the town of Vernon, Tolland county, Connecticut, August 9, 1837. In 1858 she was married to Andrew J. Cross and immediately thereafter they went to Pulaski,Jackson county, Michigan, to make their home. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Cross enlisted in the Michigan volunteers, and in October, 1862, while serving with the Union army, he passed away, leaving his wife and two children, Wm. H. and Agnes E. After her husband's death, Mrs. Cross returned to Connecticut to reside. Her health being poor and her son having attained sufficient years to be of assistance, she decided to go west and take up land, and in May 1881, she filed on a homestead in (?) Prairie township, McCook county, South Dakota. In 1889 she and her son came to Salem and resided there continuously until the call came for her to depart. In September of 1921 she had an attack of illness lasting five or six weeks; a second attack followed in December and January, and later a third attack lasting about two weeks culminated in her death, March 19, when she answered The Master's call and peacefully passed away, having attained the ripe old age of 84 years, 7 months, and one day. Her daughter, Agnes, preceded her to the Great Beyond in 1899, and she is survived by her son, Wm. H. Cross, of Salem, three grand-children, two great grandchildren, one sister, and four brothers. The poet said:: "The lights are out, In the mansion of clay; The curtains are drawn, For the dweller's away; He silently slipped O'er the threshold by night, To make his abode In the City of light." Out of town relatives present at the funeral were Mrs. L. M. Culver of Mosherville, Mich., a sister of the deceased, and Charlie E. Carter, of Lansing, Mich., and Miss Ruth Carter, of Sioux Falls, grandchildren. Cards of Thanks: For the kindness and sympathy shown us by our dear friends in the final illness and death of our beloved mother, sister, and grandmother, and for the beautiful floral offerings, and we extend our sincere thanks. W. H. Cross, Mrs. L. M. Culver, Charley E. Carter, and Ruth A. Carter.5

Ichabod Gararas Carter was born on 4 August 1829 in New York.1,3 He was the son of John Carter and Joanna Raynor.1,2 In the 1830 census in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, Ichabod Gararas Carter is assumed to be enumerated with John Carter.4 In the 1840 census in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, Ichabod Gararas Carter is assumed to be enumerated with John Carter.5 In the census of 24 August 1850 in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, Ichabod appears in the household of John Carter as Ichabod Carter. He is 21 years old, a farmer, and was born in New York.6

Ichabod Gararas Carter married Amanda S. Carter on 25 August 1851 in Manorville, Long Island, New York. Her last name was also Carter and they settled in Yaphank.7,8,9,10 On 27 February 1854 their son, Parker Emerson Carter, was born in New York.7,11,12 Their second child, John Gilbert, was born on 18 March 1856 in Patchogue Long Island, Suffolk County, New York.7,13,12,14 Their third child, Alvin W., was born on 11 April 1858 in New York.7,15,16,17 In the census of 7 August 1860 at Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, Ichabod Gararas Carter, shown as Ichabod Carter, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Amanda S. Carter, John G. Carter, Alvin W. Carter and Parker M. Carter. He is 29 years old, a farm laborer and was born in New York. No real estate value is shown.7 Their fourth child, Benjamin, was born on 13 April 1861 in New York.18,16

During the early years of the Civil War, Ichabod was not needed to fight because he was married and had four children. As enlistments fell, however, the government instituted a draft. On May 11, 1863, Carter was drafted along with 201 men from Brookhaven Town into the Union Army. At this time he was thirty-five years old, had blue eyes, auburn hair and was five feet ten inches tall. He mustered into Company A, 133rd New York Infantry Regiment in September of 1864. He was sent to Hart's Island, New York for training until October 14, 1864, and then was sent to join the regiment at Cedar Creek, Virginia. By this time, there was only seven months left in the war, so the 133rd was involved in only minor skirmishes with the Confederates.11,19

Their fifth child, Alford E., was born in 1864 in New York.20 Ichabod Gararas Carter was released from active military duty on 6 June 1865. After the war, Carter returned to his family in Yaphank. He suffered from piles, and claimed on his application for a disability pension years later that it was a result of digging rifle pits, hard marching, and exposure. He was sent to the regimental hospital at the time, where he was treated by the regimental surgeon.21

Their sixth child, Lucy A., was born on 25 June 1866. Lucy died the next year, right before her first birthday.22 In the census of 10 August 1870 in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, Ichabod Gararas Carter is listed as the head of household which included the following household members; Joanna Carter, Amanda S. Carter, Parker E. Carter, John G. Carter, Alvin W. Carter, Alford E. Carter and Silar P. Carter. Ichabod, age 40, is a farmer with real estate value of $1500 and personal estate value of $300. He is married living with 5 sons, his wife, his mother and a Mary A. (last name unreadable). It is unknown who Mary A. is. She was 29 years old and was born in Ireland.23 Their seventh child, Fredrick, was born on 9 December 1874 in New York.11,16,24

In 1876, Ichabod and Amanda moved with their family to Delevan, Faribault County, Minnesota. They operated a farm for about three years around Delevan.11,25,26 In 1878, Ichabod and Amanda moved with their family to Dakota Territory. When they first settled in the area, there wasn't a town around them, but years later the place was called Canistota, McCook County, South Dakota.25

Ichabod Gararas Carter It is likely that Ichabod filed for a land patent around this time also. One was recorded years later, on 1 June 1882, for 160 acres.27

He survived the death of his wife, Amanda S. Carter, who died on 17 October 1878 in Dakota Territory.28 In the census of 7 June 1880 at McCook County, Dakota Territory, Ichabod Gararas Carter, shown as Ichabod Carter, appears as a head of household. Living with him is, his sons, John G. Carter, Alvin W. Carter, Benjamin Carter, Alford E. Carter and Fredrick Carter. Ichabod, age 50, is working as a farmer. He and his parents were born in New York. Next to his household is his son, Emerson Carter.29

Ichabod Gararas Carter's second wife was Jane Catheart, daughter of John Cathcart and Mary. They married between 1881 and 1882 in South Dakota. Jane appeared as Jane Newcomb. She was a widow; her first husband being Scott Newcomb.30,31,32,33,34 Ichabod Gararas Carter and Jane Carter were separtated circa 1885 at Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. They were never legally separated, nor is it known if they were ever legally divorced. One of Ichabod's son thought the reason they separated was because Ichabod learned that Jane had not divorced her husband. However there is a record of Jane's husband dying in 1873.30,31,35 Ichabod Gararas Carter appeared on the Veteran census of 1890 at Wayne Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota.36

Ichabod Gararas Carter's third wife was Mary A. Pate. They married on 26 November 1890 in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. Their names were shown as Ichabod G. Carter and Mary A. Criag. Mary was a widow; her first husband being a Mr. Craig. Pastor F. W. Moon married them at the Free Methodist Church. No children were born from this union.11,37,38,39,40,41

In February 1892, Ichabod Carter was living in Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, South Dakota and filed for a pension. He wrote that the examination board did not respond to his first claim, which appeared to have been made when he was living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His pension file includes several statements and documents from various individuals; all indicating the same thing, that he had Piles and rheumatism in his back and hips. Elisha Carter, Ichabod's brother, stated that Ichabod was disabled with Piles to such an extent that at times he was unable to do any labor or work and suffered apparently great agony. He added that prior to entering the army, Ichabod was healthy. The Pension Agency approved his pension at the rate of $8 per month by reason of rheumatism and piles. Over the years Ichabod had requested an increase and the papers shown that on 15 August 1900 he was receiving $12 per month.

On 2 March 1882, Ichabod's doctor describe Ichabod as 5'10", 175 pounds, 52 years old, and that his external piles were bad. On 14 June 1891, his Doctor's examination gives his pulse rate per minute at 66, respiration 18, temperature 98.4, height 5''10", weight 165 and age 61 years old. This medical report also states that Ichabod was in much pain, had soreness in his left hip and lower extremity, that standing and walking cause much pain and inflammation in piles, that he has pain after eating, and that diarrhea and constipation alternated. In the 21 Dec. 1892 Doctor's report, Ichabod showed joints of rt. arm and hand enlarged and stiffened, hip joint of left side movement impaired 1/4, valvular lesion of the auricle ventricular valve of left side of heart with regurgitate murmur easily distinguishable, liver enlarged and tender upon pressure, skin jaundiced, stomach and intestines distended by gas, and the presence of three piles about the size of a small almond, extremely sensitive to touch and bleed readily.42

In 1895, Ichabod moved to Elm Spring, Washington County, Arkansas. He purchased a place about five miles from his son's place in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas. He moved first and his wife was to follow him. However she died on 15 December 1895, before making her move to Arkansas. He stayed in Arkansas about three years.11,43,44 Circa 1898, Ichabod moved to Dover, Kent County, Delaware.45 In the census of 20 June 1900 in Dover, Kent County, Delaware, Ichabod Gararas Carter, shown as Ichabod Carter, appears as a head of household, which includes, his son, Gilbert J. Carter. He is 70 years old, a widow, and his brithday is given as August 1829. He was born in New York, as were his parents. His income is from his pension and he owns his own home.46

Ichabod Gararas Carter married fourth Mary Tierman, daughter of John Freeman and Mary Caffrey, on 5 May 1901 in Dover, Kent County, Delaware. Father Barnes married them in the Episcopal Church. No children were born by this union.11,47,48 Ichabod was working as a storekeeper in Dover, Kent County, Delaware.49

George C. Weston was born on 29 August 1807 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.1,2 He was the son of Timothy Weston and Thankful Cadwell.

George C. Weston married Abba Augusta Slack, daughter of Samuel S. Slack and Sally Ann Leeds, on 20 August 1834 in Congregational Church, Coverntry, Tolland County, Connecticut. She was barely 16.3,1,2 On 25 October 1835 their son, Charles Weston, was born in Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2 Their second child, Lucy Jane, was born on 9 August 1837 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.4,1,5 Their third child, William Henry, was born on 23 September 1839 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2

George C. Weston, shown as George Weston, was listed as a head of a family on the 1840 census Tolland County, Connecticut. He is between the age 30 and 40. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also in this household, William Henry Weston and Charles Weston, males under 5 years old, Lucy Jane Weston, a female under 5 years old, Abba Weston, a female age 20 to 30 years old.6 Their fourth child, Frank Leed, was born on 12 February 1842 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2

On 30 April 1842 at Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut, George C. Weston began purchasing land. He donated $25 towards the Rockville Baptist Church's building fund 02 October 1842. His wife was batized there earlier that year.2 Their fifth child, George Edgar, was born on 30 March 1844 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2 Their sixth child, Abby Augusta, was born on 6 February 1846 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1 Their seventh child, Herbert Alonzo, was born on 14 March 1848 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,7 Their eighth child, Ervine Howard, was born on 9 April 1850 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2 In the census of 25 September 1850 at Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut, George C. Weston, shown as Geroge C. Weston, is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Abba Augusta Slack, Charles Weston, Lucy Jane Weston, William Henry Weston, Frank Leed Weston, George Edgar Weston, Abby Augusta Weston, Herbert Alonzo Weston and Ervine Howard Weston. At age 44, he is a machinist with real estate value of $1700.3 Their ninth child, Lilla Minerva, was born on 12 March 1852 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.8,1,9 Their tenth child, Albert Eugene, was born on 2 June 1856 in Vernon, Tolland County, Connecticut.1,2

George sold his land in Vernon, Connecticut to Frederick Yost on 1 April 1859.2 On 5 April 1859, George and Abba moved with their family to Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan. His son Edgar tells that his father had a farm of 70 acres in Vernon when he desired a change and was influenced by Horace Greely of the New York Tribune, who wrote "Go West, young man, go West!" At 2pm on 5 April 1859, their familiy took a boat down the Connecticut River and arrived in New York City the following morning. Edgar remembered the disappointment and the homesickness at the surroundings and he remembers all of the older children declared they would not live there.2,10

On 7 June 1859, George purchased 40 acres in the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 25. It was one mile from the old McNair school which the children attended.11 In the census of 7 August 1860 at Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan, George C. Weston, shown as George Western, appears as a head of household which includes the following household members; Abba Weston, Frank Leed Weston, George Edgar Weston, Abby Augusta Weston, Herbert Alonzo Weston, Ervine Howard Weston, Lilla Minerva Weston and Albert Eugene Weston. He is 54 years old, working as a farmer, and was born in Connecticut. His real estate is valued at $800 and his personal at $300.12

On 16 July 1863. George Edgar Weston writes to his father, George Weston, in Pulaski, Michigan. "You can scarcely imagine the joy, which the news of the fall of Vicksburg occasioned in the soldiers today .... it made them feel good.... also, there is a rumor out, that Morgan has been captured up in Indiana. It would be a joke on John if it was so, and it seems as if it ought to be so. We have about 10 to 12,000 of us good Cav, as ever was here, under the Command of Gen. Stanly, the 4th Mich. is here .....Frank has been groaning around with a bile, for a day or two, but it is getting better now, John is tough and hearty, but complains that he has not heard from his father, for a long time, he is detailed down town to guard cattle that we have captured. Frank is asleep in our day tent all doubled up as if he was on a wide bed, and it was all his, and your coresspondent is sitting on the ground in the shade of a mulberry tree writing and thinking of home, and whether they would like to see him there or not, at any rate he would risk it if he could go there.
How is wheat coming in this year, and how are the crops in general. Tell James, that we are looking for a letter from him everyday, and that we must not calculate that Augusta writes for both of them. Tell the boys I would like to write to them, but I have very little time, and less paper for all such things are left back with the train. Give my love to Mother, Brothers & Sisters and accept a large share for yourself. This from your son E. Weston."2

In the census of 7 July 1870 in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan, George C. Weston, shown as George Weston, is listed as the head of household which included the following household members; Ervine Howard Weston, Lilla Minerva Weston, Albert Eugene Weston, Agnes Eloise Cross and Abba Augusta Slack. He is 63 years old and was born in Connecticut. He is working as a farmer with real property value at $2000 and personal value at $400.13

George C. Weston died on 4 September 1878 in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan, at age 71.1,2 He is buried in the Pulaski Cemetery located in Pulaski, Jackson County, Michigan.1,2 He was survived by his wife Abby, his son Frank, daughter Lilla, and others.2
