The village of Bingham, today nothing more than a crossroads, was once a progressive and bustling community in Leelanau County, located near the east shore of Lower Lake Leelanau (Carp Lake). The first sign of a settlement was in 1881 when a sawmill was located on the shore of Carp Lake. Despite the hectic years in the beginning of the lumbering industry, the village of Bingham continued to grow. There was a postoffice, a saloon, blacksmith shop, and two other stores handling general staples. Three boarding houses provided for the lumberjacks and sawmill crewmen. Social life centered around the weekly dance in the hall near the center of the village. John Foote was a popular fiddler, and his sister, Clara Foote, played the organ. There was also an Indian fiddler named John Manitou. It was lots of fun for the young folks.14

He witnessed the marriage of Fred E. Driscal and Clarissa Sylvia Foote on 9 August 1898 at Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan; Clara and Fred were born on the same day and their parents were living in the same community. Fred's family moved south to Grand Rapids, but Clara's family stayed nearby in Leelanau and Grand Traverse's counties. Clara and Fred were married 24 years later on their birthdays. Interesting to note that their marriage license was from Kent County, but they were married in Grand Traverse County.
