The Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 began over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages in that publication. Cards with groom names were made from these indexes and placed in the Genealogy Division. Later cards with brides names were added to this core index. Through the efforts of the Genealogy Division staff, and the assistance from volunteers, cards were made for both name of bride and groom for all other counties where marriage records exist through 1850. These cards were made from information in the Genealogy Division. Original marriage records are located in the county seat where the marriage took place. He enlisted for three years with no bounty paid. His personal appearance at the time of enlistment was 32 years, 5' 7", dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and occupation shoemaker. He enlisted as a musician and served in that capacity through October, 1861. He is listed as Private from November 1861 through March 23, 1862, when he is shown as a Sergeant. On September 29, 1863 he is again shown as a Private. Later on a disability pension claim, it is stated that on January 15, 1862 at Fort Marshall in Baltimore, Maryland, he fell from a parapet (a low wall on the edge of a building) onto his own weapon and suffered a hernia. On March 1864 he contracted chronic diarrhea while stationed at Baton Rouge, Louisiana and that his condition persisted for the rest of his life and was a contributing factor in his death.17,18,19,2 He was released from active military duty on 31 July 1864 at New Orleans, Louisiana. He mustered out after his three years of service. At the time of his discharge, he received $27.38, coming from his clothing account.18

A portion of the regiment landed in the rear of St. Philip and waded across to the quarantine, the balance going up the Mississippi to New Orleans, being the first of the army to land. The regiment went into camp at Algiers and captured several steamers on the Red River. The regiment went on to landed at Baton Rouge, June 1, and was in the battle at that place Aug. 5. A long letter from Jesse H. King to General J. W. McMillan who was his Commanding Officer at Ft. Marshall in Baltimore recounted in detail the circumstances surrounding both his injury there and contracting chronic diarrhea in March 1864 that were the basis for his claim. General McMillan, who was stationed at the War Department in Washington DC at the time forwarded the letter to the Pension bureau with a negative comment on the validity of the injury claim. 19. Civil War Research Database. Online at www.civilwardata.com. Data unveritied. The Civil War Research Database is a relational database. This means that there are numerous files (i.e. roster records, pension index records, GAR records, etc. ) which are "related" to each other. With HDS' Database the "relationship" or connection between these multiple files is the soldier's name. These files contain information gathered from the different sources used as discussed below. Not every soldier is in every file, nor is the type of information about a soldier in a particular file the same for every other soldier in that same file. Also, the pace at which we at HDS can enter the information about each soldier will vary significantly based on the type of source documents available to us. Therefore, the Database is not a complete biographical story on each soldier, but rather a source of significant war and post war events that a soldier experienced that can be used for the study of the Civil War.      Sarah Jane Lee was born on 6 June 1828 in Hamilton County, Ohio.6,2 She was the daughter of William Donham Lee and Sara Jane Hook.3,4,2,1,5 Sarah Jane Lee survived the death of her mother, Sara Jane Hook, who died on 9 February 1839.7

Sarah was a young child when her mother died and her father placed her with the Krumbaars and he went to look for work. She spend the rest of her young life with that family and even got married out of that home. When the Civil War broke out, the family she had been living with moved back to Virginia because they were sympathetic with the South.8

Sarah Jane Lee married Jesse Hugh King, son of Ivan King and Matilda Waldron, on 25 May 1849 in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. She was married out of the Krumbaar home and was given a dowry of a cow, a dozen chickens, etc..; the same as this family had given their daughter.9 In 1850 their daughter, Harriot Jane King, was born in Indiana.4 In the census of 1 October 1850 in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, Sarah appears in the household of Jesse H. King as Sarah J. King. She is 21 years old and was born in Ohio.10 Their second child, Mary Keziah, was born in August 1851 in Indiana.11 Their third child, William Butler, was born circa 1853 in Indiana.12,5 Their fourth child, George Finley, was born on 22 February 1856 in Taylor Township, Scotland, Greene County, Indiana.13,3,5,4,14 In the census of 2 August 1860 in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, Sarah appears in the household of Jesse Hugh King as Sarah J. King. She is 30 years old and was born in Ohio.15 Their fifth child, Eliza Ann, was born circa 1861 in Indiana.5,16 Their sixth child, Edward Lee, was born in April 1867 in Indiana.5,17 Their seventh child, Charles Stanford, was born on 31 August 1869 in Indiana.5 Sarah J. King has not been found on the census of 1870. It is assumed that this household is living in Greene County, Indiana. Their eighth child, Nora Ellen, was born on 4 August 1874 in Scotland, Greene County, Indiana.3,4,18 In the census of 1 June 1880 at Scotland, Greene County, Indiana, Sarah Jane Lee, shown as Sarah King, appears as a head of household. Living with her is, her sons, George F. King, Edmund L. King and Charly S. King, her daughters, Nora E. King and Eliza A. King . She is 49 years old, keeping house, and was born in Ohio, as were her parents. She is shown as married, but her husband is not recorded in this household. She is also listed as head of her household, but included in the house is a John Bramble, age 40, his wife, Mary, age 28, and their daughter Mary E., age 11. It is not known if they are related.19 Between 1880 and 1887, Sarah moved to Yale, Jasper County, Illinois. Her husband, Jesse, had moved earlier.3 She survived the death of her husband, Jesse Hugh King, who died on 9 February 1887 in Yale, Jasper County, Illinois.20 In 1902, Sarah moved to Charleston, Coles County, Illinois.21

In the census of 1910 in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Sarah Jane Lee, shown as Sarah King, is listed as a head of household, living alone. She is shown as living at 16th and Madison. Her son, Edward King and family are living next store. She is 81 years old, a widow, has her own income, and was born in Indiana. Her father was born in the US and her mother was born in Ohio. According to the census, six individuals are living in his household. However, two of these individuals also own their own home. It is unclear if she is running a boarding house or the information in the census is wrong.3,22

Sarah Jane Lee died on 23 March 1913 in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, at age 84 of pneumonia and infirmities resulting from old age..21,2 She is buried in the Moung Cemetery located in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois.3

Another record states that they applied for a marriage license on 19 Aug 1826 and were married the next day by John Mercer, P. G.. This record shows his name as Irwin H. King and that he was an early settler of Monroe County, Indiana.1,10 Circa 1827 their son, William King, was born. After 1826 their daughter, Amanda King, was born. On 14 August 1828 their son, Jesse Hugh King, was born in Monroe County, Indiana.11,12,1 In the 1830 census in Monroe County, Indiana, Matilda Waldron is assumed to be enumerated with Ivan King.13 In the 1830 census in Monroe County, Indiana, Matilda Waldron is assumed to be enumerated with Ivan King.13 On 4 May 1832 their daughter, Margaret Jane King, was born in Indiana.11,14 Circa 1835 their son, John H. King, was born in Indiana.15 Circa 1840 their son, Benjamin H. King, was born. In the 1840 census in Monroe County, Indiana, Matilda Waldron is assumed to be enumerated with Ivan King.16 Circa 1843 their daughter, Ann Eliza King, was born in Indiana. Their eighth child, Alfred, was born circa 1847. In the census of 1 October 1850 in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana, Matilda appears in the household of Ivan King as Matilda King. King. Her name appears as Matilda Eaton. She is 70 years old and was born in Indiana. Her parents were born in Kentucky. It is assumed that she is Granville King's mother and not his mother-in-law. The words "Mother-in-law" are written in very heavy print in the census, much darker than the other writing. Perhaps the census taker changed the notation to mother-in-law after the fact, because Matilda's last name wasn't King. However, Granville shows his mother's birth location as Ohio and Matilda's birth location as Indiana.24 Matilda Waldron is buried in the located in Old Salem, Martin County, Indiana.1

FatherJohann Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink4,5,6 b. 17 Sep 1774, d. 26 Mar 1829
MotherIlse Maria Sophie Charlotte Hoeltken4,5,6 b. 2 Sep 1773, d. 10 Dec 1823
Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink was born on 5 February 1802 in Evangelisch, Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.7,8,4,6 He was the son of Johann Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink and Ilse Maria Sophie Charlotte Hoeltken.4,5,6 Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink survived the death of his mother, Ilse Maria Sophie Charlotte Hoeltken, who died on 10 December 1823. Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink survived the death of his father, Johann Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink, who died in 1829.

Ernst and Sophia may have had more children, but listed here are only those that were shown as immigrating to the US in 1844 plus the one child born in Indiana that is recorded in the 1850 US Census. The assumption is that the children were listed in birth order on the immigration boat log. Combining that information with the German birth records (which include the long German birth names) and the 1850 US Census to make assumptions how they shorten their name. It appears that Carl Heinrich Friedrich Conrad Piepenbrink is also Carl Hari and Charles H. and that Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink is also Christ Wilh and Christian Wilhelm. There were other Piepenbrinks in Fort Wayne at this time and because of the long German names - these assumptions may not be correct.

Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink married Ilse Marie Christine Sophie Witte, daughter of Cord Henrich Witte and Anne Margrathe Ilsabe Bussen, on 10 March 1833 in Evangelisch, Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.9,10 On 31 March 1834 their daughter, Luise Charlotte Elisabeth Piepenbrink, was born in Evangelisch, Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.2,11 On 7 December 1836 their son, Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink, was born in Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.12 On 17 March 1839 their son, Carl Heinrich Friedrich Conrad Piepenbrink, was born in Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.13,14,15,16,17 On 15 March 1841 their son, Ernest Diedrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink, was born in Germany.18 On 11 November 1844 their daughter, Maria Sophia Piepenbrink, was born in Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.2,19,20,21 On 11 November 1844 their daughter, Sophia Maria Piepenbrink, was born in Windheim, Westphalia, Prussia/Germany.22,23,20 Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink and Ilse Marie Christine Sophie Witte immigrated on 1 July 1846 to New York City, New York. They arrived on the vessel Bark Republic, from Bremen. Charles Piepenbrink and family list Fort Wayne as their destination. The boat log shows Ernest, age 44, Sophia, age 38, Charlotte, as 11, Friedh Wilh, age 10, Carl Heinr, age 7, Ernst Diedr, age 5, Maria Louise, age 6 mo., Sophia Maria, age 6 months. Ernest's brother, Conrad, was living in Fort Wayne at this time. Also, traveling with them was Marie Witte, age 50 or 5. Most of the people on this boat were headed to Ft. Wayne.2 On 21 October 1847 their daughter, Christian Piepenbrink, was born in Indiana.24 Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink survived the death of his wife, Ilse Marie Christine Sophie Witte, who died. In the census of 19 November 1850 at Adams Township, Allen County, Indiana, Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink, shown as Ernst Pepenbrink, is listed as a head of household which includes the following household members; Charles Pepenbrink, Ernst Pepenbrink, Mary Pepenbrink, Christian Piepenbrink, Lopig Pepenbrink, Charlotte Pepenbrink and Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Piepenbrink. He is 48 years old, a shoemaker, and was born in Germany. He has $1100 in real estate value. He is living next to Conrad and Meena Pepenbrink and Christina Pepenbrink, age 56. I believe these Piepenbrinks could be relatives and that Christina could be Conrad's mother. Her husband died in 1830.7

Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink married Charlotte Muller on 14 June 1851 in Allen County, Indiana.25 Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink left a will on 12 August 1854 at Allen County, Indiana, The whole value of all my property is $2400, the half of which shall be mine as long as I live, and after my decease my wife, Charlotte, shall have it as long as she lives. Supplementally I appoint Grierwick Bose and Christian Piepenbrink to be Guantians of my chldren after my death... Signed Christian Piepenbrink, Grierick Bose, Conrad Piepenbrink.26

Ernst Diedrich Piepenbrink died on 11 September 1854 in Allen County, Indiana, at age 52.27 He is buried in the Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery located in Hessen Cassel, Allen County, Indiana.27
