George Finley King1,2,3,4,5
M, b. 22 February 1856, d. 16 December 1939
Father | Jesse Hugh King1 b. 14 Aug 1828, d. 9 Feb 1887 |
Mother | Sarah Jane Lee1,5 b. 6 Jun 1828, d. 23 Mar 1913 |
George F. King was still living at the home of his parents at the time of the 1880 Census. His mother, Sarah Jane King, was listed as Head of Household for the family in Scotland, Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana. His father, Jesse H. King had probably already relocated to Yale, Jasper County, Illinois at the time. Not long afterward, Sarah Jane King and the other children joined Jesse in Illinois. George F. King stayed in Greene County, Indiana.
His father was in the Civil War and that left George F. with the livelihood at home. George and Mary Ann lived at Scotland where their six children were born. After a few years they moved to Taylor ridge, and then to Koleen. George F. was a plasterer of walls and ceilings and a wallpaper hanger. He was self-reliant, honest and a staunch Republican. He and his daughter Victoria Lynch, operated the Koleen Post Office many years. Augusta Mack and son alfred, stone cutters of Owensburg, made the monuments for George F. and Mary Ann King.
The following poem of tribute to his grandfather, George finley King, was written by Everett Lee King in the style of the famous Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley;
We had a lot of fun, by golly - me and Grandpa King
Heed tell of cowboy stories way out West an everthing
About the days when he was young and little older too
When the Post Office Inspector come a stompin' his way thru
An how he upped and told him to git on the other side
He really upped an done it, too, tho injured was his pride
He argied with ar ole tom cat who'd sneak into his chair
An take the whole thing over jues like he weren't there.
One nite we all went to the show an me and Grandpa King,
Sat way up front of all the rest so he'd hear everthing
Now he wa spry as any kid, at gettin' round you see
An when we's lettin' people by he'd up rat now like me
Both hands went on the arm rest - his feet were in the seat,
You'd thought he were a 10 year old his speed was hard to beat.
Now fore he went to bed at nite he'd grab a little box
An turn the shockin voltage on - enuff to dry your socks
An then a big toboggan was put on his grayin' head,
And then he kivered up his ears an dove right into bed.
There never was a better scout a politician true
You'd think he was Republican, I think he thought it too.
He smoked a pipe - used R. J. R. or Country Gentleman,
An when I'd get it on my bike - I'd made myself a friend.
An out would come the nickel, jest like I was for hire
An if I never took it he'd set the place afire.
Oh, there's a million things you'd like to hear bout Grandpa King
And I guess he's smart at jist bout most dern near anything
An he's the grandest talkin' mate a feller ever had
But I guess I liked him most because he was my daddy's dad
