The Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 began over 20 years ago. The project initiated by Dorothy Riker, the late former Editor of The Hoosier Genealogist listed early county marriages in that publication. Cards with groom names were made from these indexes and placed in the Genealogy Division. Later cards with brides names were added to this core index. Through the efforts of the Genealogy Division staff, and the assistance from volunteers, cards were made for both name of bride and groom for all other counties where marriage records exist through 1850. These cards were made from information in the Genealogy Division. Original marriage records are located in the county seat where the marriage took place. The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 (Betsy Holt, Vinsen Williams, Martin County, 8 Feb 1840) Source No. 189.

They had no sooner arrived at the trapping ground and set their traps than Mr. Holt suddenly took sick and before medical attention could be given him, he died. They were in the middle of a bitter winter and in the face of a threatening storm. Mr. Baker started on his sorrowful journey back to Clarke county. A blizzard made it necessary that he leave the wagon in which the body lay and search for shelter and after the storm continue.14,7

  1. Indiana State Library Genealogy Division, Early American Marriages: Indiana to 1850, viewed online @ www.statelib.lib.in.us/www/indiana/genealogy/mirr.html. , (Indiana). The completed index cards became the Database to an Index of Indiana Marriages Through 1850 Source No. 189.
