Sophia Gongwer was born in 1797 in Ohio.2 She was the daughter of Joseph Gongwer and Anna Altman.1

Sophia Gongwer married Jacob Bricker, son of John Bricker and Nancy Boyer, on 4 April 1819.3,4 In the 1820 census in Salem Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, Sophia Gongwer is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob Bricker.5 In the 1830 census in Franklin Township, Richland County, Ohio, Sophia Gongwer is assumed to be enumerated with Jacob Bricker.6 Sophia Gongwer survived the death of her husband, Jacob Bricker, who died on 11 April 1839.3

Sophia Gongwer, shown as Sophia Bricker, was listed as a head of a family on the 1840 census Franklin Township, Richland County, Ohio. She is between 40 and 50 years old. One unknown male under 5 is living in the household. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also in this household, Isaac Bricker, a male under 5 years old, John Bricker, males, age five to ten years old, Jacob Bricker, a male age 10 to 15 years old, Simon Bricker, a male age 15 to 20 years old, Joseph Bricker, a male, age 20 to 30 years old, Sally Bricker, a female age 15 to 20 years old.7

Sophia Gongwer married John Miller between 1840 and 1850.8 In the census of September 1850 in Rome, Seneca County, Ohio, Sophia appears in the household of John Miller as Sophia Miller. She is 53 years old and was born in Ohio. Also living in this household are her three sons, Jacob, William, and Isaac. They are living near her sons Simon and John also.8 In the census of 27 June 1860 in Salem, Steuben County, Ohio, Sophia appears in the household of Isaac Bricker as Sophia Bricker. She is 62 years old and was born in Pennsylvania. Isaac is Sophia's son and Sophia and her husband, John, are incorrectly shown as John and Sophia Bricker and should be John and Sophia Miller.9
