     Samuel Chapin was born circa 1597/98 in Paignton, Devon County, England. He was the son of John Chapin and Philippa Easton.1 Samuel Chapin was baptized on 8 October 1598 at Church of St. John, the Baptist, Paignton, England.2

     Samuel Chapin married Cicely Penney, daughter of Henry Penney and Jane, on 9 February 1622/23 in Paignton, Devon County, England.1

     Samuel Chapin came to New England probalby with his father and family in 1635 or earlier. In 1641, he bought a house and became a freeman, which implied that he was a church member and gave him the right to vote and hold office under the Colony Government.3

     In the winter of 1642-3, Samuel and his family migrated to a new settlement known as Agawam, later renamed Springfield. Samuel is first called deacon in the records on Feb. 21, 1650. In 1652, he was commissioned a magisrate fro the administration of justice, "allowing them the power of the County Court." He held the office until 1664, and in addition performed important duties, laying out land grants and the plantations that became Northampton and Hadley.4

     Samuel Chapin died on 11 November 1675.5

     Cicely Penney was born circa 1600/1 in Paignton, Devon County, England. She was the daughter of Henry Penney and Jane.1 Cicely Penney was baptized on 21 February 1600/1; Paignton, Devonshire, England.1

     Cicely Penney married Samuel Chapin, son of John Chapin and Philippa Easton, on 9 February 1622/23 in Paignton, Devon County, England.2 Samuel Chapin came to New England probalby with his father and family in 1635 or earlier. In 1641, he bought a house and became a freeman, which implied that he was a church member and gave him the right to vote and hold office under the Colony Government.3

     Cicely Penney died on 8 February 1681/82 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.
