     OBITUARY: The subject of this sketch was born in Union township, Cumberland county, May 13, 1885, and departed this life February 22, 1915, being at the time of his death 29 years, 7 months and 9 days old. Mr. Carpenter was engaged teaching in Cumberland country for a number of years and also taught in Clark county. He was considered one of the Cumberland county's best teachers and most respected citizens. In the last year he accepted a position as Railroad mail clerk, but in the last few months he became unable to perform his duties, due to his fast failing health. He was a member of the Baptist church at Union, being converted at the age of 17 years under the preaching of two lady evangelists. He lived a true Christian life. By his death his wife losses a kind husband, children a loving father, parents an obedient son, brothers and sisters a good brother, relatives a friends. He was married to Miss Coral Gossett, daughter of Mr. Luke Gossett, a prominent farmer of Cumberland county June 14 1908. To this union tow children were born, Mildred Eleanor and Donald Edgar. He leaves to mourn our loss, a wife, two children, a father, a mother, two brothers, John of Casey, IL and Ivan, who lives at home, a sister Mrs. Pearl Hadley of ... Ill., a grandfather and grandmother and a host of relatives and friends. During his illness he often expressed his desire to get well and stay with his family then would often times sign the song It is ... with my soul. The services were conducted by Rev. Harry S. Reese of Flora, Ill., after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by. The pastor said as his text, 2 Timothy 7 and 8 verse. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all that love his appearing. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the many friends who so kindly assisted them during the sickness and death of their companion, father, son, and brother.¹
